Marques 'Almeida AW24
I have been trying to get into the Marques show for years now. Technically, I still haven't gotten in but that's okay, there are other ways to see a collection. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Paris showroom for Marques 'Almeida. I desperately wanted to see their AW24 collection. When I finally went through the collection, I was so glad that I did not see it on the runway first. This may very well change the way I view collections in general. To be able to feel the weight, hand and texture of all of the different fabrics and understand the patterning on an intimate level is a game changer.
First and foremost, even with all of the clothing just hanging on the racks, I could tell immediately that there had been a lot of consideration put into the design concerning the inclusion of different body types. I could see it working on most if not all body types. For example, there is a ton of volume but the body won't get lost in it. Depending on our body types the way we wear volume, the way we "bubble" if you will, is all different. A well patterned bubble makes a form, otherwise you're just a blob. There were so many well-patterned bubbles within this collection. These dramatic skirts that are gathered in such a way that they almost seem pleated but they embody a voluminous bubble is genius. The way these shapes are manipulated whilst using the most optimal fabric to hold a shape makes for a beautifully sumptuous piece.
I fell completely in love with this collection at first sight. Which is hard to do when they're just on hanging on racks but for someone who's seen a lot of fashion over the last three decades, I can say with confidence that this collection checks all the boxes. The pairing of ingenuity and luxuriant textiles makes for a perfectly lavish collection.
