Crazy Rich Asians
Andrew Gn Paris Fashion Week AW19
From the crowd to the collection, everything was screaming “Crazy Rich Asians” at the Andrew Gn AW19 show. Singapore based Japanese and Chinese rooted Gn studied at London’s Central Saint Martins and Milan’s Domus Academy before working for Emmanuel Ungaro. His style is an eclectic juxtaposition of East meets West, Sci-Fi meets Baroque. Somehow, Gn makes this all work. He has dressed celebrities such as Olivia Wilde, Janelle Monae, Beth Ditto, Gillian Anderson and Amy Adams.
Outside of the show the usual suspects arrive at the venue. Guests dressed to the nines, heavy hitting influencers and major publications alike wave their invitations in front of organizers checking the guest list. The main event outside seems to be a tiny Yorkie that all of the paparazzi are taking pictures of. I quickly make my way inside and take a seat, good thing it was an unobstructed view because I can feel that this was going to be a great show.
The show quietly began with a black and white over-sized coat adorned with traditional Chinese frog closures. The black and white theme continues as coats and dresses, all distinctly patterned. Splashes of blue and green make their appearance before the show moves into full color. A large green and black giraffe print dress adorned with feathers and fringe makes its way down the runway followed by a fiercely tribal printed orange red dress. The parade of rich tones and carefully selected trims pass by me one by one. They tell a complex story of a woman who understands herself and is not afraid of her own boldness. She celebrates herself and is proud in doing so.
