Giving Me Looks

Milo Maria London Fashion Week AW19

The room was quiet, like a museum. Milo Maria’s presentation was set like an exhibit of “What Strong Women Wear”. In fact, designer Maria was inspired by strong women who created their own reality in this AW19 collection. The narrative stems form the relationship she had with her grandmother Liudmila while growing up in Moscow. Liudmila was a creative woman with a job at a factory which stifled her creativity in post war USSR. She began making jewelry, little sculptures of art to adorn the individual. Motivated by her grandmother’s willful creativity, Maria moved to London to study fashion design and also to build her own reality.

This collection is full of 90s references in its usage of leather and powerful colors and prints. The leather pieces are powerfully draped and ruffled as well as fashioned into a dynamic power suit. Long full length coats appear in leather, fur and an exquisite grey tiger print. Structured suits, sculptural lantern sleeves and luxuriously draped velvet dresses are all mixed together in this masterful 90s inspired mosaic.

Milo Maria AW19 walks a fine line between inspiration and aspiration. The inspired soft, dreamy pink fur coat stood alongside an aspirational red power suit. A mix of aesthetics and patterns keep this collection ever-moving in and out of fantasy and wearability. The fortified attitudes of the models were the perfect platform to showcase these creations. These are women who won’t wait for what’s next, they already know what is coming because they created the path for it. The Milo Maria woman is prepared and confident, she is powerful with a sense of purpose and determination.
