Russian Tourist Visiting Italy in the 1980s
Pru Lulla AW19 LFW Designer Showcase
“Do you want to know the inspiration for this collection?” “Of course!”, I replied. “It is a Russian tourist visiting Italy in the 1980s!” Yes, it all makes sense now! I knew there was something so unique about this collection when I came across it at this season’s London Fashion Week Designer Showcase. The colors of nude, green, purple and red work so well together. At first I thought the collection may have been influenced by the Renaissance but upon close inspection, 1980s Russian tourist makes total sense. The whimsical nature of this collection is evident in the designer. A warm and welcoming Maria Tokmakova speaks about her collection with a sense of humor that is often missing in fashion lately. The nostalgia of the 80s does not overtake the collection, it remained very of today. The exploration of memories whether fictional or not are a focal point for London College of Fashion alum Tokmakova. Most of her pieces are sourced and produced in the Umbria region of Italy using high quality Italian textiles. Pru Lulla’s modern take on the iconic vertically quilted coats of the 80s makes this look a sought after aesthetic again. The knit pants with a cutout at the hip is definitely on my wish list.
