Undercover AW24
When the show began I don't think most of the room knew it had already begun. There was no music, just a long pause before a voice recited a poem about being a single mom going through her day with her son doing very ordinary things such as waking up and getting ready and preparing breakfast for her and her son. The mundane everyday things such as dropping him off at school and going to work and dealing with her co-workers all day until finally going home and picking him up and spending the evening together...
As ordinary as this all sounded it was unbelievably touching. It felt very personal to me and I was deeply moved. Throughout this recital we all have to remember there was still a fashion show happening. The clothes were out of the ordinary. Everyday clothes that were put together in a way that was unusual and unbelievably fresh. An ensemble that looked like a top with pants which were actually sewn together and was a jumpsuit. Ordinary items such as shopping bags and baguette holders were made with a sheer fabric so they look like plastic bags. Everything about this collection looked like career mom wear. Work to weekend clothes that can survive a quick wash and a hang dry.
The details that Undercover is so famous for continues in this collection. So many flounces, handkerchief hems and pieces of sheer and sequins as well as fringe. One of the most unassuming looks is a cream button-down shirt and matching trouser ensemble with an attached flying cape, (possibly unintentionally) portraying this working mother as a superhero. Thinking back on it, the very first look that came out seemed like a regular tank top and jeans. It wasn't until I got to review a close up shot that I realized this was all sewn into one piece and made into a comfortable looking jumpsuit.
It is so hard to describe what this collection looked like because in the worded description it could be misinterpreted into seeming like complete chaos. You really did just have to see for yourself how a mixture of a cable knit sweater over a sparkling fuzzy skirt and a turtleneck organza cape all worked together. There is an underlying sense of humor in this collection that I think only working moms understand. It might all seem like a hot mess but we'll pull it together in the end and it's going to be fantastic. Trust the process.
