I Get This!
pushBUTTON London Fashion Week AW19
There was an overwhelming sense of an “I GET this!” feeling when I saw cult Korean label pushBUTTON’s runway show at London Fashion Week. An eclectic mix of fabrics in varying textures and prints have been clashed together to create a sportswear line that is both elaborate and wearable at the same time. Bustiers, bustles and Elizabethan collars play with oversized silhouettes that blend genders. The ornate headpieces and attention to detail presents these pieces as works of art and is a reminder of why I love the art of fashion. I was fortunate enough to have a chance to speak with the designer backstage after the show and got his thoughts on a few things. This collection is everything I love about fashion and has touched a piece of my heart, bringing feelings of nostalgia and enchantment.
I see a lot of historical influences but also a lot of futuristic influences in your collection. Are you more influenced by the past or the future?
It’s a difficult decision but if I had to choose it would be the past. I always describe my collection as the future but as an influence, the past greatly influences the designs.
Gender fluidity is a theme in your design direction. Do you consider your line to be for both sexes?
Actually, the existing collection is gender neutral. I have always been influenced by menswear in my womenswear designs and vice versa. Every one of the pieces shown today are made for both men and women.
Your designs are heavily western influenced, do you ever feel the pressure to have more eastern influences in your design since you are in an Eastern market?
No, I don’t feel stressed or pressure about my inspiration. This time I feel that I represent the Korean culture through my accessories. For example I would write things in Korean on the shoes. This way, the western influences and eastern influences can exist in one look.
