When one gets an invitation to Anrealage it is ALWAYS a coveted invitation. Paris Fashion Week never fails to surprise, but Kunihiko Morinaga’s ANREALAGE AW25 show at the American Cathedral was a true revelation. Titled “Screen”, the collection redefined the boundaries of fashion, transforming garments into dynamic, ever evolving displays.
The neo-Gothic grandeur of the American Cathedral provided the perfect backdrop for Morinaga’s vision. As models glided through the space, their black ensembles, initially stark and monolithic, suddenly erupted into a kaleidoscope of colors, patterns, and messages. These weren’t just clothes; they were canvases for real-time expression, shifting with the wearer’s whim.
Morinaga collaborated with MPLUSPLUS to integrate LED-LCD textiles, creating fabrics that could morph like liquid crystal screens. One standout moment; a velvet dress emulating stained-glass windows, its pattern flickering to life as if the cathedral’s rose windows had been woven into the fabric. Did anyone pay attention to the footwear? 3D-printed block heels made from bio-based PU, completing the digital-meets-craft aesthetic.
The show’s two acts mirrored this duality. Act one featured handwoven patchworks and quilts inspired by light projections, while act two unleashed the full potential of reactive clothing. Models’ outfits synced like pixels, cycling through TV static, color bars, and cosmic explosions, all set to a bespoke soundtrack by Thomas Bangalter (yes, of Daft Punk). ANREALAGE didn’t just showcase clothes; it questioned what fashion could be. In an age of digital overload, Morinaga proposed a radical idea; garments as interfaces, blending art, technology, and identity. The collection’s closing looks, dissolving into starry voids, felt less like an ending and more like a beginning.
If fashion is a language, ANREALAGE FW25 spoke in emoji, binary, and pure poetry. And in the hallowed halls of the American Cathedral, it preached a sermon on the future of self-expression and all of its possibilities.
