On/Off presents Jack Irving AW24
The last thing that I wanted to do after pretty long day and a nice afternoon break was to go all the way from Barnes to Shorditch. But for Jack Irving I will. I have heard many wonderful things about this artist and his conceptual works and I've seen it online for over a year. I've experienced FOMO every time I've seen a post. I was excited to see his latest showcase of wearable inflatable art sculptures at his LFW installation.
"Amphitrite" takes us to a subterranean aquatic underworld in which we discover new alien species. The backdrop is an abandoned power plant in the ocean and over the years the sea combined with electromagnetic energy has been harnessing and creating new hybrid alien life forms. When you enter the space you definitely feel the strange and somewhat creepiness of it even though the place was packed and the electronic music was blaring. These 3 alien creatures stood perfectly still while the plate under them spun them slowly 360°. Every few minutes there were sparks of electricity sputtering out from a source along the wall. The whole experience was very surreal.
Other than the wearable sculptures, the show space featured floor to ceiling sheer screens with projected images of the models in Irving's creations. The layering of this added to the intensity of the atmosphere and really drew us into an other worldly experience. This presentation left me wanting more and I can't wait till the next collection. Will it be a continuation or are we going to be seeing something new altogether? Suppose I must try and get into the next show now. Can't wait!
