Black Sheep...or Duck
Uooya AW19 LFW Designer Showcase
After following this line for 2 seasons I am even more excited now than I was at their premiere last season at London Fashion Week’s Designer Showcase. Uooya is a Chinese term that translates to “black duck”, which is equivalent to the western “black sheep”. Based on Chinese streetwear, this line is as rich in colors and textures as the culture is. Loud, busy, showy, obnoxious but all together just spectacular. I remember a few years ago the “accidental hipsters” of China were internet famous. This label keeps the genre going and took real life unintentionality and turned it into an intentional fashion statement.
This season Uooya was inspired by Chinatown, Bruce Lee and “Kill Bill”. Metallic yarn knit into sweaters with tiger motifs, retro pandas and ethnically commercial florals hung on the racks. A yellow, black striped sweat suit reminiscent of the one Uma Thurman’s character’s wore in “Kill Bill” was featured next to a Bruce Lee t-shirt of the same color story. Grey hoodies with patches of sequins paillettes dazzled next to a rainbow metallic short sleeved knit shirt. Uooya is so much but yet, it leaves me wanting more. I was elated to learn this season that there is a very important collaboration coming up for them in the near future. Although I cannot disclose who this iconic collaboration is with, I can say with great certainty that I will be there fanning out at the launch sometime in Summer 2019. Until then, I’ll have to keep containing my excitement.
